Have you ever doubted yourself or felt like you couldn’t succeed because of your size? “GOAT, now in theaters, tells a powerful story that challenges those doubts and shows that greatness isn’t defined by appearance, but rather it’s defined by heart, mindset, and teamwork.
The movie is produced by NBA superstar Stephen Curry and Sony Pictures Animation. Curry is also the voice of one of the two main characters (Lenny) in the film. The other main character is Lenny, who is voiced by Caleb McLaughlin. This is a great film for the youth to give them great life lessons throughout their life journey, with the intended age gap being from 6-7 or pre-teen. The film follows Will Harris, a young goat raised by a single mother who loved the Vineland Thorns roarball team (the movie’s version of basketball). Their star player, Jett Fillmore, a legendary black panther, became Will’s role model. Will always dreamed of being just like her one day and making it to the big stage.
Throughout the film, the saying, “Smalls can’t ball,” is repeated, suggesting that Will will never be able to compete with the larger animals in the game. Meanwhile, the Vineland Thorns are on a long losing streak, and fans begin blaming Jett, saying she is too old and should retire. However, Jett refuses to quit until she can bring the Claw or the championship title back to Vineland.
After Will’s mother passes away, her belief in him becomes his motivation. She always told him he would become a roarball champion, and he feels determined to prove her right. When Will is selected for the team, he faces constant doubt and criticism because of his size. He spends multiple games sitting on the bench, waiting for his chance. That moment finally comes when Jett is injured, and Will is put into the game. He makes a game-winning three-point shot, instantly becoming the new spotlight player. While the crowd celebrates him, Jett struggles emotionally, feeling as if her “GOAT” title is being taken not just figuratively, but literally by an actual goat.
During the championship game, Will’s team is seen as the weakest, and the opposing team constantly targets him, assuming he’s the worst player. Trying to prove himself, Will attempts to carry the team alone. However, during a timeout, he realizes what “GOAT” truly means: it’s not about personal glory, it’s about leadership, trust, and believing in your team.
Student Ahviana Pearson also shared her thoughts on the film, saying, “The movie was really good. I liked it because it was a basketball-based movie, but also because it had a strong message that it’s okay to rely on others and that you can do anything. It just depends on where your mind is.”
Overall, GOAT is a great movie to see with friends and family. It delivers an inspiring message about teamwork, confidence, and trusting others, while also reminding viewers that no one is “too small” to succeed. The film blends fun, emotion, and motivation, making it a meaningful and entertaining experience for anyone looking for more than just a movie but a message.
