The Lady Jackets had their home opener against Quincy High School on Friday, April 11th. The girls have a full returning roster with two new freshman athletes, Mya Barrett and Sabrina Herzberg. The ladies wanted to recover from a rough season last year and improve a lot.
The Yellowjackets had a tough double-header up in front of them. The ladies lost the first game, with the final score being 2-11. By the end of the 3rd inning, the Jackets were on the board 2-6. Junior, Ciara Barrett, swings and hits a hard ground ball, causing freshman, Sabrina Herzberg, and senior Hannah Stimer to score. Junior Jorydan Metcalf starts the game off pitching for the Jackets and strikes out six.
During the second game, the ladies returned to the field with much more energy, but sadly, it wasn’t enough

to pull them through. They were sadly mercied in the second game, ending in the 4th inning. The final score was 6-21. C. Barrett collected 3 hits in 3 at-bats. Barrett also singled in the first inning, then continued to doubled in the third and fourth innings. Coach Buck has been coaching softball for four years now. Buck states, “We always talk about what our teams’ goals will be for the season. This year, we our trying to go 50%, and win at least half of our games.” The girls on the team have great chemistry with each other and try very hard to keep each other motivated throughout the game, even when things may not be going in their favor.
After the tough game Friday night, the ladies started their Saturday off bright and early with a tournament at Concord High School and played two games against Addison High School and Athens High School. The girls started off the day with a bang, winning against Addison 11-10. Evelyn Goldsmith hit an inside-the-park home run and tied the game 7-7 in the bottom of sixth. Metcalf pitching for the jackets again, allowed seven hits and seven runs, six of them earned, whilst striking out five and walking nine. Senior Taylor Cole also pitched this game, giving up two hits and three runs, striking out three and walking two. It was the bottom of seventh when the game was tied 10-10 when junior Gabriella Herzberg singled, scoring one run.

The ladies used this as motivation for their next game and went and won against Athens, final score being 3-16. They started off the game strong, scoring six runs on five hits in the bottom of first to take the lead 6-1. Cole had a triple in this inning and drove in two. To add onto the girls’ early lead, in the bottom of second, Goldsmith doubled and scored three runs, Danielle Fritz also singled and scored one run. Bottom of third inning, Cole singles down the right field line, Haley Stimer singles to left field, Sabrina Herzberg walks, and Mya Barrett grounds out, everyone scoring one run. Yellowjackets accumulated 13 hits in this game.
The ladies will take on Hillsdale High School on Thursday. The game will start at 4 p.m. at Concord High School. Come out and show your support for the girls and the team. Good luck Jackets!
