On Wednesday, the boys’ and girls’ track teams faced Union City in their second meet. Both teams did well and many athletes got first place. 

For the boys’ team, Malachi Boyd got first in the 100-meter dash. During the 400-meter dash, Adair Artis achieved first place, and a PR of 51.6 seconds. Artis also got first place in the 800-meter dash. During the 110-meter hurdles, Ashton Easterwood earned first place and a new PR. The boys’ teams achieved first in 3 out of 4 of their relays. The 4×200 was run by Javion Taylor, Connor Keefer, Tyreke Brown, and Malachi Boyd with a total time of 1:30. The 4×400 relay was run by Connor Keefer, Tyreke Brown, Mehki Wingfield, and Trenton Frazer. They beat the Union City team by 1.2 seconds ending with a total time of 3:37. The final relay the boys’ won was the 4×800. The team consisted of Cole Bates, Isaac Waldron, Connor Stevens, and Adair Artis. For the field events, Mehki Wingfield won long jump and high jump. Wingfield beat the school record for long jump by jumping a total of 22’5”1/2. The boys’ ended up tying with the Union City team with a score of 68.5.

Senior, Adair Artis was a huge asset to the team. He says, “I think I did pretty well. I played my role for the meet and helped my team the best I could.” Artis shares that his favorite part of the race was at the end of the meets. He says, “We all thought we possibly were going to lose, but we still fought hard in the 4×400. The whole team cheered as we came back to tie without even knowing that was going to happen.”

The girls’ team also had a good meet. Cieara Barrett got first and had a PR time of 5:56.1 in the 1600-meter race. During high jump, Maria Stevens got first place by jumping a height of 4’2”. Liliana McCabe got first in shot put and discus. Some of the girls did not get first place, but they did exceptionally well. Rylee Sinden and Saniya Newton ran the 100-meter dash, and both got PRs. During the one mile, Riley Adams got a season record of 7:03.8. In the end the girls’ ended with a score of 29.

Junior, Liliana McCabe competed in a few events during the meet, but her main events are throwing shot put and discus. She says, “I think I did well; I always push myself to do better.” Her favorite part of the meet is when everyone was cheering each other on and supporting each other.

Freshman, Cieara Barrett tells her favorite part of the meet, “I really liked winning the mile.” She likes how supportive of each other everyone was. She adds that she wants to work on getting her times back down to where they used to be.

The next track meet is today at Pittsford and another is April 26th at Reading. If you are able to make it, please come and support both teams!
