With the holidays coming up soon and the weather growing colder, giving back to the community should stay on our minds. It is important that we always look out for each other and make sure the holidays are magical. So, how do we do this?
There are many different ways to give back to our community. Some ideas that have been brought up from the past have been canned food drives and candy drives to donate to the people who may need it. This helps people, especially during Thanksgiving time, provide dinner for their families. The school consistently does this, so how can we help do more as individuals?
NHS member, Julia Stevens, participates in many volunteer activities. She shares a few of them, “The biggest thing I do is the book for the girls’ basketball team. I go to all their games and do it. I also help bag and deliver the Food for Thought bags every week. It was something new I started to do this year.” She says that she does this just because it makes her feel good: “I am fortunate to have a lot, so I like to try to give a lot of my time to helping others.”
There are many food banks in the communities around us that we can donate to. The Spring Arbor Food Bank is a good option for the families around us. They accept both volunteers and food donations. This is a great option for people who may not have food or money to donate. Volunteering is a great way to help out.
NHS advisor Mrs. Taylor has encouraged her students to help out the community as well. Taylor shares the future plans for the students: “Students will be helping out at the Mann house and other museums around the area.” She also informs that they will be hosting a canned food drive around Thanksgiving or Christmas to donate to a food bank.
There are many different ways to raise money for donations; a few examples would be leaf raking around the town, bake sales, and art shows. The money from these could be donated to local food banks and awareness shelters to help those in need.
