On Monday, October 6th, the Junior Varsity football team played against Pittsford. The JV football team fought hard and earned a victory with the score being 48-18. The JV players had the support of varsity football players on the sidelines and families in the stands, all cheering for them.
Some of the greatest plays were by freshman Luke Burrow. Burrow had at least
three touchdowns and continued playing aggressively. Burrow stated, “I kept my head up, and when I went to the locker room, I made sure everybody held their head high too. Someone who did really well was Wyatt Mandrelle, even though he got into his head; it worked out. I improved by not getting into my head and having a good attitude. My goal was to have more than five touchdowns in the season, and I reached it.”
A player who did really well with passes and 2-point conversions was freshman Wyatt Mandrelle, who is also the quarterback on the team. Mandrelle explained, “My biggest challenge was keeping my head up and my attitude. I got down, so I started to keep my attitude up because plays don’t go the way they’re supposed to. I stayed motivated by keeping a great mindset that I don’t want to lose another game. Burrow did pretty good; he was running really hard out there. My attitude improved in the second half. In the first half, I got pretty down on myself, and in the second half, I got my attitude up. I had a goal at the beginning of the game to win, and I achieved that goal.”
Another player who did really well and scored a touchdown is sophomore Austin Taylor, who is also the linebacker and wide receiver. Taylor has been playing well all season and responded, “My biggest challenge was getting open and not overpursuing. I stayed motivated by saying, ‘You need to stay in the game because even if the score is not the end of the world, you have got to make it up.’” Taylor explains, “Mandrelle led the team very well. Even when he was down, he still pepped everybody up. I got better with my eyes and route running when everything shut down. The goal I had before the game was to score a touchdown, and I ended up scoring a touchdown towards the end.”
In the end, the JV players went home with a victory and the amazing feeling of achieving their goals. The JV record is 3-1. The next game is at Mendon High School tonight at 6 p.m., where the JV football team will play against Mendon.
