Golf is a great sport to join; it teaches amazing social skills and bonding with others. The girls’ golf team has four members this year, three of whom are new and just started golfing this summer. The girls are coached by Mike Bauman. Haley Stimer is a junior in her third year of golf. Julia Stevens, Cieara Barrett, and Mya Barrett are all new to the sport.
Tuesday, September 16th, at Cascades, they played 18 holes. The girls dropped 30 strokes from their score last week. Haley placed 7th, ending with a 96 and earning a medal for being in the top ten. Mya placed 34th with a 119, Cece placed 36th with a 122, and Julia placed 42nd with a 132. Wednesday, September 17th, at Lake Leeann golf course for 9 holes. They placed 3rd overall with a total score of 211. Haley placed 3rd with a score of 42, Mya placed 11th with a score of 52, Cece placed 18th with a score of 52, and Julia placed 22nd with a score of 61.
Senior Cieara Barrett is new to golf this year. Other than golf, she plays basketball, softball, and runs track. She was excited to share how she felt about her performance. She shares that she thinks she did pretty well, but could have done better at chipping and needs to work on that more.
“I feel like this season has gone pretty well for us, having 3 new golfers, and I think we are all going to keep improving throughout the rest of the season. ” Barrett explains.
She also expressed how she is most proud of how much she has improved from her first practice to where she is now.
Cieara Barrett’s sister, sophomore Mya Barrett, also decided to play golf this season.
Mya exclaimed, “I feel I did pretty well, but definitely not my best.” She feels that she should work on chipping and knowing how far the pin is. Mya is proud of how she is doing, as it’s her first time golfing; however, she explained that she believes the rest of the year will go pretty well, since she keeps improving every match. Mya added that she is also proud of herself for walking 18 holes, since it is a lot of walking and not hitting the ball into the woods.

Senior Julia Stevens really enjoys golf and is proud of herself for trying something she has never done before.
“I think I’ve improved quite a bit this week,” Stevens explains. “I’ve never played gold till now, and it’s been a lot to learn, but I’ve put a lot of what I have learned into the matches: improving my scores.”
One thing she has been working on is chipping and putting; however, she has improved a lot in putting and is still going to work to make it better. Stevens is excited about the rest of the season. She expressed how she has had a good time so far, and it’s been a lot of fun.
She is hopeful for the rest of the season: “Moving forward, I think we have a good chance of going somewhere after regionals, if we all focus and get our scores down.”
Haley Stimer has played golf since her freshman year. She went to the state competition last year with her sister, Hannah Stimer, who graduated in the class of 2025. This year, Haley wants to continue to grow and make it further. She has expressed her love for golf. “I love golf and am going to continue to grow and improve my skills to make it to states again and place higher.”
Coach Bauman wanted to add how proud he is as a coach of how they are doing with having mostly new girls. “It’s going really well, they are quick learners. They’ve caught onto the game pretty easily and are athletic, so that definitely helps make it easier too, and they’re doing a great job.”
The girls will play a jamboree next week, September 23 at Michigan Center. Golf is a great way to grow relationships with people and work on patience. I encourage people to join golf next year and step out of their comfort zone.
