This year, the Multimedia Publications class tried something new for spring sports media days. Our team of Julia Stevens, Lucy Otto, and myself, Connor Stevens, wanted to step up our photography for media day, and we found the perfect solution: fire. Using fire in sports photography is quickly becoming a lucrative venture for many photographers but at a cost that many families just can’t justify.
The preparation was simple and effective. We had to find a way to light different types of sports equipment on fire without hurting anyone or burning anything, which went smoothly, thanks to our chemistry teacher, Ms. Colangelo. The fire lighting process was all about fast timing and safety.
The flaming pictures were done for the spring sports seniors here at Concord. One of the seniors to participate was Jordan Medellin, who shares, “ I thought that the pictures were cool; they turned out great and it was fun to be a part of. I thought that they were a great idea since I saw them on TikTok from many other schools doing them, and they just looked like a fun idea all the way around.”
Mrs. Colangelo is one of the key reasons for the success of the fire pictures. She breaks down the process of the fire, she shares, “Ms. Kelly and I talked about how it would be cool to do. It was exactly what I did in my class when we do fire balls with methane gas.

It was pretty much the same temperature and same number of lighting and carbon, so I knew that it would be okay. I used the soap-it had to be a certain kind of Dawn- then we put the butane in there, and it captures the gasses in the bubbles and burns very quickly.” Mrs. Colangelo also discussed the teamwork involved in the photos and the fire. She said, “I thought we all did great working together. It truly was teamwork, and it was so much fun being a part of it and watching the work.”
The recent fire pictures for spring sports, showcasing our athletes, capture true school spirit and excitement throughout Concord. As we celebrate their achievements, let’s continue to cheer them on in their upcoming events. We wish the best of luck to a fantastic spring season filled with memorable moments and victories.
