This week, Ms. Fiero’s Astronomy class took on the challenge of building bottle rockets! This is the first year this course has been taught at CHS, with approximately fifteen students taking it. Everyone in the class was assigned to group up and build bottle rockets that they would actually be able to launch.
The students all went out to the football field on a sunny Monday to test their final products. While most of the rockets were successfully launched, junior Brady Rainy designed a rocket that shot straight up in the air and went higher than many others.
While building her bottle rocket, senior Jaylyn Otto shares, “My favorite part of the assignment was the creativity, seeing what materials you can use, and seeing what does and doesn’t work out. It’s awesome, I love it!”
Senior Taylor Cole shares,” My experience with this assignment it was fun, it was nice to do something different then just writing.”
After everyone launched their rockets, Ms. Fiero explained her experience teaching this unit: “It was a bit hard. I tried a different approach that is student-centered. So I was hands off, allowing them to develop their own learning and understand why they’re doing certain things without me telling them what to do.” She also shared that she built her own rocket as a model for the students. Ms. Fiero says that if she teaches this course again, she will definitely have the students participate in this activity.
