As spring break approaches so does spring sports. Boys’ golf will be starting soon, boys’ baseball has already started practicing same with softball and track. However, girls’ basketball has made it to regionals, so not everyone is at practice. We are happy to start spring sports and become successful in accomplishing their goals.
Boys’ baseball had a very successful season last year, they had a new coach: Coach Scott Chase. He held them to high standards, which made them extremely successful. They made it far, winning district champs. They lost four seniors but are gaining three freshmen: Charlie Cole, Carter Vandenburgh, and Hunter Watts. The goal they are hoping to accomplish this season is to make it to state.
Charlie Cole expresses how he is hoping to start on varsity as a first baseman and hit above .400. he says he is looking forward to connecting with everyone on the team and building relationships with his coaches and teammates.
Coach Jesse Buck is the softball coach and has been coaching for 5 years. He enjoys watching the girls grow from freshman year to senior year. Buck expresses how he feels about this season: “This year is the first year everyone has had me as a coach. There is a different culture, which will help with wins and losses. I’m really excited about this season. There are a lot of girls who have been stepping up to make this year successful. I’d really love for us to win districts and have a overall record of 500.”
Just like baseball, the softball team has some freshmen who are going to be a good addition to the team: Mya Barrett and Sabrina Herzberg. Mya Barrett is a dual sport athlete playing both softball and track, but has many goals set for softball. She says, “My first goal I would like to accomplish is learning the game because the last time I played was 7th grade. My second goal is to never drop a ball during the game; there are a lot of small mistakes that can affect the game. My third goal is to have fun; a sport isn’t about trying hard for nothing– you should be passionate about the game.” Besides her goals, she looks forward to playing with her teammates and playing in games for the experience.
Track and Field has had practices and is already preparing for track meets. MarKeese Boyd is the boys’ coach, Dave Jordan coaches the girls, Coach Davis is an assistant coach as well, and Coach Mike Jurasek helps wherever needed. They have gained an impressive amount of freshmen coming up. Annie Saenz, Rakai Hill, Amaya Ward, Alyssa Persinger, Mya Barrett, Amari Blakley, Marcus Gill, Darrell Jackson, and Dayton Smith. They all participate in different events. Last year in middle school, many of them broke records and won trophies for our school.
Rakai is hardworking, and when asked about what she wants to accomplish, she shared that she wants to improve her techniques in hurdles and get a PR. She is also hoping to accomplish her 200 and 100 times. She is also looking forward to building speed to improve now or later on. Rakai explains how she sees the team growing she says, “I think the team will grow in friendship, and everyone will get faster.”
Boys’ golf is coached by Coach Mike Bauman. Golf will not be starting till later, and it isn’t a very long season. This is usually a smaller team, but they are hoping to make it to accomplish many goals for such a small team. Besides baseball Carter Vandenburgh is also doing golf, which is a hard thing to do. Carter explains that he wants to beat his own personal records and is looking forward to trying a new sport.
These teams are gaining amazing athletes. We are excited to see how they grow as teams and accomplish what they put all their hard work towards. Wishing coaches, players, and our seniors the best of luck for the final sports of the season!
