The Concord Yellowjackets have advanced in the game! On Friday, during district finals, they faced the Hillsdale Academy Colts and chased them out of the hive, winning 60-32. The boys are the first to win the boys’ district finals since 2002. Jordan Medellin added 8 points, Darrell Dean added 9 points, and Jett Smith led the way with 19 points.

After the game, the boys gathered around for a celebration. Each one received a medal, and the team added a new trophy to the case. They spent time getting photos with family, coaches, and teammates and were able to walk into the locker room with a sense of fulfillment and excitement for what the future holds.
Marcus Gill, the boys’ coach, shares the goal they all have in common: winning the state championships. Gill shares a little of the boys’ performance: “We played extremely hard, and our togetherness was unmatched. We need to work on our offensive execution to execute at a Championship level.” During the game, Gill felt that the game was fun, and he was excited to watch the boys play at such a high level. Afterward, he felt a sense of accomplishment, joy, and relief.
Trenton Frazer, a junior on the team, adds that, “We could have stayed out of foul trouble in the first half, which would have allowed us to have a better player rotation, but the game went well overall.” The boys started to get limited on the amount of boys who could go out there without being cautious of fouls, which can limit players’ ability to play. This can slow them down and cause them to limit their energy. In the future, the boys are going to start the game more cautiously; that way, when they get near the end, they have more player rotations and put all of their energy into the game.

Marcus Gill Jr, a freshman on the team and the coach’s son, felt that in the first half of the game, the team was playing selfishly and not working together, but coming out of the break, they fixed it and put the boys at a big lead in the game. The boys’ team is known for their defense; they are continuously working hard and quick to get back and protect the basket. He felt that they did great with this during the game, and this also played a major role in their success.
