On Tuesday, February 4th, the girls’ team traveled to Bronson to take on the Vikings. The Yellowjackets were undefeated in the conference (13-4) until they faced the Vikings who have had a great season so far (12-2) with their only loss in the league being to the Lady Jackets. The girls’ played despite the adversity they had to face with injuries and sickness, playing their hardest, leaving everything they had on the court, but coming short of the win.
Last time the teams played each other it was close the whole game with the Yellowjackets came out on the win 49-46, but for this game, the Yellowjackets were missing their starting point guard, sophomore Bradie Lehman with a fracture in her wrist caused from the game at Michigan Center last week.
Grace Thorrez plays center and is a senior captain on the girls’ varsity team, who also had 12 points and led the Yellowjackets with the team-high. Thorrez shares, “I’m most proud of how we always stick together and take responsibility as a team and don’t point fingers at each other no matter what. The main goal to finish out the season is to stay healthy mentally and physically so we can continue to work hard and get 1% better every day to get closer to achieving our goals.”
Cieara Barrett, a junior who had to play the point guard position, scored 9 points and led the Yellowjackets with her crucial ball handling and leadership against the Vikings. Barrett has goals that she would like to finish the season with. She explains, “My favorite thing about us is we all come to practice every day and work hard, knowing that we have a great opportunity to make it far in the postseason tournament together. I also think…we need to…finish out the season and be prepared for games. I have to do what I can to help our team win as much as possible.”
Avery Arbuckle is also a talented sophomore on the girls’ team, Arbuckle plays center for the Yellow Jakcets who started this game due to the injuries. Arbuckle shares, “We play to win instead of playing not to lose; I’m proud of what we have accomplished so far, but we need to finish the season out strong.”
Though the girls lost, they played with a lot of heart. We congratulate them for what they have accomplished and wish them the best of luck on accomplishing their goals as a team and finishing their season out strong their next game is at Stockbridge tonight at 6 pm. Their next home game is on February 11th. Good luck, Lady Jackets.
