At the end of the holiday season, a group of students stuck out to teachers for their determination to finish the first semester off strong. These students were chosen as December’s students of the month; here is some insight into each of them.
For the freshmen, Zane Jason was chosen. In his free time, he enjoys playing video games, working out, and reading the Bible. Of all the classes he is in, his favorite one is Spanish because he wants to learn a new language and enjoys having Mr. Saucedo as a teacher. Though it is still early in his high school career, he has some plans for what he wants to do in the future. Jason says, “I want to be an engineer because I want a good-paying job, and maybe if I do it for a while, I could retire sooner than the retirement age.”
The sophomore candidate was Avery Arbuckle. She excels both academically and athletically, being a three-sport athlete playing volleyball, basketball, and track. One of her most enjoyed hobbies is working on her family’s farm, which has inspired her future career. She says, “I want to go into animal science or agribusiness at MSU because I like animals and science, so I want to pursue a career with those two things.” This love for animals sprouted when she was younger after watching everything her dad did. She explained that he had helped her learn a lot about animals, such as how to take care of them and how to work with them. Arbuckle adds what she feels students should do to excel in school: “I think that the best way to do well in school is to keep on top of your work and ask the teacher questions when you are stuck.”
Next up is junior Cieara Barrett. Outside of school, she enjoys playing sports and sleeping. Her favorite class is English because “Ms. Kelly is the teacher.” She does not have a specific career in mind for her future career but is hoping to go into something in the medical field. Barrett adds some tips she has for other students to do well in school: “Do your work, be good in class, and listen to your teachers.”
Lastly, there is senior Dustin Hamilton. His main hobbies are playing baseball, hanging out with friends, and going to football games with my mom. Next year he is going to be attending Spring Arbor University to study sports management and play baseball. He explains his desire to go into this field: “I plan on becoming an athletic director when I’m older. This is because I want to stay involved in the sporting community, give back to young athletes, and give them opportunities like coaches and athletic directors have given me in my athletic journey.” He adds that his inspiration to do well in school comes from his future plans. By taking harder classes, he feels like he is preparing himself for college courses as well as opening up all sorts of opportunities for himself.
We congratulate all of the students for their hard work and wish them the best of luck in all of their future endeavors!
