The girls’ locker room needed a little love. Senior Iyla Weeks took it upon herself to give it a makeover for her latest leadership project with fresh paint, mirrors, and cute inspirational quotes on the walls.
Leadership can be a positive thing for students because it allows them to build confidence, be creative, and really help out around their school and community. The leadership teacher at Concord High School, Mrs.Jessica Osterhout, talks about the importance of the class: “Having strong leadership within the school is important because it allows people to recognize needs in our school, and not just for themselves but for the population in general.” Leadership helps students identify the need and then do something to also fix it.
Mrs. Osterhout says that Iyla is a great fit for this role: “Iyla has been invaluable in leadership because she has a drive and a natural ability that allows her to get things done. She does things that are going to benefit people,” she states. “People look up to Iyla because she has those qualities and skills. Iyla doesn’t just do it for herself, she brings people along for the ride.” These are just a few of the reasons why Iyla is such a great leader and why she loves to help around the school.
Weeks mentioned that she really wanted to create a positive environment for herself, her classmates, and her teammates to just feel good about themselves, especially before their games. The girls’ locker room hasn’t been remodeled in a very long time, and the ladies needed a positive space. She felt the makeover really gave her and her teammates a space to feel like their own.
Mrs. Osterhout shares that Weeks also redid the girls’ main office bathroom last school year. She states, “Iyla had awesome feedback. The girls really enjoyed it, and it made people feel better to just have a place that is taken care of and looks good.” That project pushed Weeks’ motivation to fix the ladies’ locker room.
Bradie Lehman spoke on behalf of the athletes who were affected by this. Lehman says, “It’s more of a positive environment because I feel like we always look at the boys locker room and now ours is just as nice. It’s a lot better, and it’s pushing for things to be more even between the boys and girls.” Some of the Lady Jackets in the school noticed that the boys locker room was a lot better than theirs, and now they feel like they also have a nice space to prepare for practice and games.
Weeks among others are confident that the new look of the locker rooms will have such a positive impact on the girls in the school. It will give the ladies a more welcoming space to go when they may need a little confidence booster. The makeover was long overdue, but now the girls feel more refreshed and better than ever about their new and improved locker room.
