Energetic, driven, and passionate about sports: These attributes describe none other than Mekhi Wingfield. Concord shines the light on this talented student athlete.
Wingfield has attended Concord since 6th grade and has made many impacts. He explains his favorite memory here at Concord, “My favorite memory of high school was in sophomore year. When we won the conference championship, that was special because I had never experienced that. “
In his free time, he enjoys playing NBA 2k 24, playing a lot of basketball, and chilling out. His favorite class so far is Spanish Cultures, with Mr. Saucedo.
He plans to attend Albion College and earn his degree in business. With a business degree, he wants to own his barber shop in the future.
He explains his biggest inspiration:“I would say Coach Gill. He did not have it easy and came from a hard spot. He lived in Detroit, and I lived there as well. I look up to him as a mentor, and he came from the same place I came from.”
Wingfield has been in football, basketball, and track and field all four years of high school. During football season Tyjohn Allen shares what he is like on the field: “His passion runs deep; you can see it when he plays and in practice.”
In basketball, Mekhi could play any position on the court. This year, he scored over 1000 points, close to beating the school’s record. Mekhi shares what he likes about basketball:“ I feel like it is such a cultural sport, and to be good, you have to be together.”
After basketball season was over, he went to New York for the Nike National for both high jump and long jump, where he placed 2nd place in high jump. Last spring for track, he beat the long jump record: 22-5.75.
Coach Jur shares what he is like on the team: “He is an all-around athlete. We put him where we need him. He runs some relays and some open events, and he has excelled tremendously in the high jump and the long jump. ” Jur continues, “He is a natural leader. He works extremely hard and understands the meaning of hard work. He has also improved as a student, especially since freshman year.”
Coach Jur also shares what he hopes to see for him in the future, “My biggest wish is he can go and get a degree and be successful in life.”
Allen also shares his favorite memory with Wingfield: “The first time we played Britton Deerfield this year, I scored 3 touchdowns and he had 2, and we had a lot of fun together that night. We were on the same page that night, and it felt good.“
Another close friend, Jett Smith shares his favorite memory about him: “It would be playing basketball with him. We were playing 1v1 in my driveway.”
Mekhi’s growth and knowledge of high school provides some wisdom to his fellow underclassmen: “Take school seriously. You can block a lot of opportunities in the future if you don’t. And you never know what lies ahead.”
Concord wishes you well Mekhi and hopes you continue to work hard in life.
